This weekend the 2s hosted league leaders Warrington, but the 2s had several familiar faces returning to play in MV colours so confidence was high. Trafford received the kick off and quickly got into good shape. Several phases followed in which MV retained possession and worked their way up the pitch against Warrington’s strong defence. Unfortunately, and against the run of play, Warrington managed to rip the ball in a tackle and exploit Trafford’s slow transition from attack to defence to find a gap for Warrington’s first try. Trafford re-grouped from the restart and played deep in Warrington’s half but tempers began to flare, with Trafford losing possession and good field position due to penalties which Warrington kicked to clear their lines. Eventually Warrington took advantage of Trafford’s slow retreat from a penalty to take a quick tap and score their second try.
The pattern of Trafford doing 99% of the work for a try but falling at the final hurdle by conceding a penalty, became frustratingly repetitive from this point with Warrington’s score mounting. Just before half time a brilliant piece of individual skill resulted in a pass interception and a breakaway try giving Trafford its first try through Luke Dale, and in the second half a driving maul from the lineout resulted in MV’s second try by Jamie Butler. Jordan Parker converted one try and kicked a penalty for TMV.
Full credit to all the lads who put on the jersey. There was maximum individual effort in defence (Warrington exploiting gaps rather than weak shoulders), the backs exemplified Trafford flare in attack, and the forward carrying and set piece was on point. The penalty count was the killer and Warrington were a well drilled side deserving their top of the league position.
